Miikka, Are you a Good Goaltender?

The sport the Leafs and Flames thought they were playing on Saturday night. Yes, EA has bought the explcusive rights to CalvinBall as well.

What happened at the Air Canada Centre Saturday night on – our beloved national television/radio franchise – Hockey Night in Canada? The Flames, since their trade deadline blockbuster deals, have been projected as a team to watch going into the postseason. Are you having a laugh?

Toronto Maple Leafs 8, your Calgary Flames 6.

The more important question: What is up with Miikka Kiprusoff?

The one time Vezina winner does lead the league in wins. With 40! But, MEE kuh KIHP roo shaf – over his last three starts, NOT including tonights drilling – has a GAA of 5.01, 4.38, and 4.62. Tonight it will be 1823.42. His save percentage is also disgusting over the same period: .750, .893, .889. These are not numbers of a goaltender who will make it past the first round of the playoffs.

So, what is the best explanation for this recent serious lack of vulcanized rubber stopping aptitude?

No, I don’t think it is Finlandia Vodka. Delicious though it is.

I think ‘Kipper’ is past his prime. His stats have declined since Calgary made their Stanley Cup Finals push pre-lockout. He is now known for having slow starts to the season (just look at the first 20 games he has played of each season over the past few years). Yes, he has made some of THE BEST SAVES EVER PUT ON FILM (see youtube clip), but a top flight goalie does not allow an obscene number of goals against the Toronto Marlies Maple Leafs.

I am sick of all the respect for Kipper. He had two great years, and the rest have been above average. This year, ugh. Finland has always had a problem between the pipes. Calgary needs to do something about its goaltending. And they ought to do it while we all still believe that Kipper is a top goaltender, thus getting more then they deserve in return for him. Trade the Ginger! (He is not even a daywalker)

Here is the Big Aristotle’s declaration: Yes, Olli Jokinen had a hat trick tonight. Yes, The Flames are an improved franchise post trade deadline. No, the Flames will not win a playoff round this year, not unless the goaltending vastly improves. …and I like the Flames so much. Sigh.

  1. The Bench Boss

    Two things:

    1. when Kipper is on he is on, when he is off he is off. He seems to make the saves he has no business making, but then lets in some weak goals

    2. The defense in front of him is terrible. The actual defensemen aren’t very good in the first please, and the forwards do even less in their own zone to help out. Watch how high the two wingers stay in their own zone. They pretty much never leave the blueline just looking for a brea.

  2. Third Man (V)in

Kipper is a terrible nickname. It sounds very “wordy”…like it should mean something but it doesnt. Too close to real words, like “dipper” and “lipper” just to name a couple. Furthermore, I hate Calgary and everyone who jumped on their bandwagon when they went to the finals. This being said, Jarome is the man.

  3. Third Man (V)in

even though he (Jarome) appears to ankle skate and may well bethe worst skater in the top 20 scorers of the modern era.

  4. The Bench Boss

I’d say Shanny is the worst skating goal scorer ever

  5. jive turkey

it’s really simple, Miikka Kiprusoff is an alcoholic
